While the “work from home” phenomenon has obviously skyrocketed during the past 45 days, plenty of businesses have employees on the front lines providing essential services to make the rest of us comfortable. In fact, Zubie’s data shows that while some industries -  for example, taxis and limousines - are driving 70% fewer miles than there were just 30 days ago, other industries like construction have been reduced by only 15%. For many companies, it’s business as usual, while for others, it’s business unusual – needing to ramp up and hire quickly. In talking to our customers regularly, we asked them to share a few best practices on how they are effectively using telematics during this COVID-19 health crisis.

  1. Monitoring New Employee Driving Habits: Delivery and service industries are having to go to great lengths to hire drivers quickly. When speed is required, due diligence tends to become a “nice to have” rather than a hard requirement. Many Zubie users have found that paying closer attention to their driver scorecard allows them to quickly assess if they need to coach their new employees, or if they’ve made a hiring mistake. Using the driver scorecard has been a great tool to fail fast, with a data-driven way to quickly put a hiring mistake behind you.
  2. Save Time and Money: If there’s a more important time to watch every penny being spent, we can’t imagine it. Using Zubie to monitor driver idle times and driving routes is a great way to ensure your employees are being as efficient as possible. Idling places extra strain on the vehicle if done in extended periods of time, as well as wastes fuel.  Even with fuel costs at the lowest they’ve been in decades, your potential cost savings can be eaten up by idle time, decreasing your overall productivity. 
  3. Prepare for the Rebound: If your business is a little slower than normal right now, savvy fleet managers are reportedly using the down time as an opportunity to inspect vehicles and get them the maintenance they need. Conducting preventive maintenance now will help keep your vehicles on the road once things return to normal. In fact, we’ve seen increased usage in Zubie Smart Maintenance, a feature that allows companies to schedule maintenance online and save 26% on average with brand-name trusted service providers such as Aamco, Pep Boys, and Firestone, just to name a few.
  4. Improving Operational Efficiency:  Whether your business is in a growth mode or you are a little slower than normal, this is the time to think about what you want your business to look like after COVID-19. Some of our newer customers are using this time to test and learn -- they’ve installed telematics in a few of your vehicles and learned how that data will help your business each day. It’s a low cost way to dip your toe into telematics, allowing them to ramp up quickly as policies have been established, the teams have been trained and the vehicles have been outfitted. If your operational improvements are in place now, you’ll be able to hit the ground running  post COVID-19 and be ready to rebound.
